Time marches ever onward, and as it does, it can wear down pretty much anything. That’s certainly the case with your driveway, which will eventually need to be repaved. Not sure when that day will come? We’ll cover some tell-tale signs that you may need to have your driveway repaired or repaved with asphalt paving.
It's wise to track how old your driveway is getting. Different types of driveways will last different lengths of time. Asphalt paving will usually last for around 15 and 20 years, and a cement driveway can last between 25 and 50 years, according to The Spruce, an online home improvement resource. As your driveway begins to age, keep a close eye on its condition.
One of the most obvious signs that your driveway is approaching the end of its life is when large holes start to form. Potholes can be hard on tires, cause standing water, and can become a tripping hazard. Sometimes holes can be filled in, but sometimes it’s best to simply repave the driveway.
Ideally, a driveway is graded so water is allowed to drain. Besides gathering in potholes, water may gather in areas where your driveway has settled poorly. If you’re suffering from a lot of standing water, it could be a sign that your driveway needs to be repaved.
Many driveways suffer cracks. A few cracks may not be a major issue, and it’s possible that they can be fixed. If these cracks aren’t fixed, however, they can cause further damage. For example, water may seep in, freeze inside a crack, and then expand, causing the gap to widen. If your driveway is suffering a lot of cracks, it may be best to simply replace it.
Asphalt and cement may start to crumble as the surface approaches the end of its life. If you find a bit of debris now and then, it might not be a major concern. However, if the issue is becoming widespread, it could be a sign that the surface is simply worn out, and if so, it’s time to get it repaved.
A properly paved driveway can reduce the risk of personal injury and damage to your car. If you need asphalt paving, we're the team to call. Contact JC Rockland Paving today to get started with a free estimate!
